Abstract
The National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023 represents an important step in translating the vision of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 into curriculum, pedagogy, assessment and school practices. For schools affiliated with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), the framework has significant implications because many of its principles—competency-based learning, experiential learning, multidisciplinary education, vocational exposure, flexibility in subject choices, holistic development and assessment reform—are closely connected with ongoing CBSE initiatives. NCF 2023 seeks to move school education beyond content transmission and memorisation towards the development of knowledge, competencies, values and dispositions required for responsible participation in society and the world of work. The framework also recommends greater flexibility at the secondary stage and a reduction in rigid separation among academic disciplines. This paper examines the major implications of NCF 2023 for CBSE schools through a qualitative analysis of official policy and curriculum documents. It discusses opportunities and implementation challenges related to pedagogy, assessment, teacher preparation, vocational education, multidisciplinary learning and school leadership. The study argues that successful implementation requires alignment among curriculum, classroom practices, assessment systems, teacher capacity and school-level planning. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for CBSE schools seeking to translate the principles of NCF 2023 into meaningful educational practice.
