Abstract
Sustainable development has become one of the most important global policy objectives in the twenty-first century. It seeks to achieve economic growth while ensuring environmental protection and social equity. The increasing pressure on natural resources, climate change, biodiversity loss, rapid urbanization, and socio-economic
inequalities have made sustainable development essential for ensuring the well-being of present and future generations. The United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a universal framework for promoting sustainable growth across all nations. This review paper examines the concept,
principles, dimensions, historical evolution, and major challenges of sustainable development. It also discusses India’s initiatives towards sustainability and identifies future opportunities for achieving balanced development. The study is based entirely on secondary data collected from books, government reports, international organizations, and peer-reviewed research articles.
Keywords: Sustainable Development, SDGs, Environment, Economic Growth, Social Equity, Climate Change.
